The Piscataquis Chamber launches a new workforce initiative

The Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce is pleased to introduce Back2WorkHub, a workforce initiative made possible through a partnership with Eastern Maine Development Corporation and the Maine Rural Workforce Recruitment and Retention Grant Program. This new “arm” of the chamber will provide direct, individual support to out-of-work, local residents who need assistance preparing for and finding their next job or career. Our workforce staff will assist individuals through a simple intake process, with the goal of providing them with the resources they need to overcome the barriers that may be preventing them from returning to work, ultimately matching them to a member business with whom we have an established relationship.

 

The chamber upgraded its software in 2019, allowing our member businesses to easily post job openings on our website so that locals or folks moving to the area would be made aware of local jobs and how to apply for them. It became clear after some time that providing a platform for employers to post jobs wasn’t enough; because there is such a chasm between the employer and the unemployed worker. The “human” side of looking for a job has been snuffed out by digital applications collected in the cloud along with dozens, even hundreds of others. Individuals waiting for an email or a phone call rarely hear back from employers who accept applications this way. The employer is also somewhat limited in their ability to assess talent while wading through a sea of online applications.

 

Our goal is to meet the applicants, listen to their stories, struggles, and aspirations. Maximize our partnership with EMDC and other organizations to provide specific support (for example; training, higher education, car repairs, clothing, etc.), assist the applicant with a cover letter and basic resume, and finally, reach out to the member businesses who have opportunities suited for the applicant based on all the information we’ve gathered. We feel this program will make a world of difference for both our member business owners AND those seeking work.

Those interested in entering the program should complete a simple intake form. Once received, our staff will reach out to set an in-person appointment to begin the process.
